GNIZDO drone pilots association

A digital ecosystem for a niche community of drone pilots

About the project

Building the website for the Gnizdo drone pilots association — the first step towards a wider network of community platforms.

  • ✓ A platform for competitions
  • ✓ Engineers and investors in one place
  • ✓ A base the network can grow on
  • ✓ A digital ecosystem for the community

Why a community starts with a website

Gnizdo is a sports association of drone pilots, and the website is the first thing it owns in public. Before there can be a network of platforms there has to be one address where the association exists: who it is, what it runs, and how somebody joins.

The people on this page are not a marketing team. There is an organiser, a coach, pilots who race and fly freestyle, and engineers who build and test the aircraft. That mix is the point of the association: the same group that competes at the weekend solders, tunes and flies prototypes during the week. A platform for that community has to serve both halves, not only the one that photographs well.

It also has to leave room for people who do not fly. Engineers and investors are listed here on purpose: a sport built on hardware needs somebody making the hardware and somebody funding it, and a community site is the cheapest place for those three groups to find each other.

What to check before starting a similar project

  • • What the site is for on day one. A competition that has happened and a competition that is being planned need different pages, and that difference decides the structure.
  • • Who keeps it current. A community platform dies the day nobody has either the rights or the habit to publish to it.
  • • How far it is meant to grow. This site was built as the base of a wider network, which is a different decision from building a single brochure.
  • • Where the community already talks. A new platform competes with the chat people are already in, and it wins only by doing something the chat cannot.

FAQ

What is Gnizdo?

A sports association of drone pilots — people who race, fly freestyle, train newcomers and build their own aircraft. The web platform is its public home and the starting point for a wider network of community platforms.

Who is the platform for?

Pilots first, and alongside them the engineers who build the equipment and the investors who back it. The association puts those groups together deliberately, and the site is what makes that possible outside of a single event.

Why a network rather than one site?

Because a community needs more than a page. Competitions, pilot training and development each ask for their own space, and starting from a platform designed to grow is cheaper than rebuilding later.
