Booking runs itself: flexible logic, easy for guests and for the owner.
How a booking runs
Three hostels, and each one has its own rules. Some space is sold as a whole room, some of it as a single bed inside that same room. That is why this booking system was written rather than bought: a ready-made calendar assumes the unit on sale never changes, and here the same physical room is sold in two different ways.
The guest picks the dates, then picks what they are booking — the room or one bed in it. The price follows from that choice, so nobody types a sum by hand and nobody has to remember which rate applies. Payment happens in the same step, and the moment it goes through the owner is notified and availability is updated. Nothing waits for someone to open a laptop in the morning.
The awkward part of this kind of system is never the form. It is what a booking does to everything around it: one bed sold has to disappear from the room, and the room sold has to take every bed in it out of circulation at once. Availability is a single answer to two different questions, and it has to stay right in both directions.
What to check before starting a similar project
- • How each property really sells its space. Rooms, beds, or both — and whether the answer is the same in every building. Three hostels gave three different answers.
- • What a booking has to block. One bed sold out of a shared room is not the same event as the room being sold, and the rules for both need to be written down before any code is.
- • Where the notification lands. An alert the owner does not see is the same as no alert, so decide the channel and the reader in advance.
- • What happens when a payment does not complete. A half-finished booking must not hold the space for ever, and it must not quietly vanish either.
- • Who is allowed to change a confirmed booking, and what the guest sees when they do.
FAQ
Can a guest book a single bed rather than a whole room?
Yes. Both are booking options, and the price is calculated from whichever one is chosen. Where a hostel sells beds individually, the room behind them is managed as a set of places rather than as one unit.
How does the owner find out about a new booking?
The owner is notified the moment the booking is paid for. That is the point of the notification: the confirmation and the money are already there, so the message carries information rather than a task still to be finished.
Why build this instead of using an existing booking service?
Because the three hostels do not share one rulebook. The logic that decides what is on sale, at what price and for how long is exactly the part that differs between them, and that is exactly the part a generic service keeps fixed.
