Wero and ENP: what changes for unattended terminals
At the end of September 2026, Bizum, Bancomat, EPI with its Wero wallet, SIBS with MB WAY and Vipps MobilePay announced a joint European Network for Payments (ENP): approximately 130 million users across 13 European countries. For an operator of car washes, vending machines or chargers, it changes how customers will pay at the equipment within a year or two.
What is being built
ENP and Wero run on instant account-to-account (A2A) transfers based on SEPA Instant. Money moves from the customer’s bank to the merchant’s account in seconds, with no card in between.
The rollout is staged: person-to-person first, then online, then point of sale via QR code and NFC. According to the participants, full infrastructure is targeted for 2027. Wero has announced in-store payments for 2026–2027, QR first. Instant transfers have been mandatory for euro-area banks since October 2025, together with verification of payee.
Why it matters for cashier-free machines
Self-service equipment has three pain points with cards: a terminal on every bay, the acquiring fee on every small payment, and dependence on connectivity at the moment of the transaction.
Account-to-account QR payments address the first two: a bay needs a code on the housing rather than a terminal, and the A2A fee model differs from the card schemes. Connectivity remains the system’s job: the bay must receive confirmation and start even on an unstable network.
At car washes, QR payment from a phone without a terminal on each bay already works and is noticeably cheaper across a network. ENP and Wero turn that scenario into a pan-European standard.
What does not change
Cards are not going away: tourists, corporate cards, habit. A sensible system accepts both and brings them into one reconciliation.
Reconciliation matters more: with three or four payment methods, every payment must be tied to a specific device and a specific start.
How to prepare now
Check whether a bay can be started by a server command after payment confirmation. If it can, adding QR or A2A is an integration task. If the bay only starts from the bill acceptor, that is the first thing to change.
Do not lock yourself to one acquirer. Wero reaches points of sale through partner acquirers, among them Worldline, Nexi, PAYONE, Stripe, Mollie and Worldpay. A payment layer separate from the bay logic can add a new method without rebuilding everything.
Build accounting around the device, not the payment method, and plan for no connectivity: a bay that buffers events and backfills them when the link returns loses neither money nor data.
